The house of cards continues to play out in matters Trump administration. New developments put secretary of state Rex Tillerson out and CIA Director Mike Pompeo in as the new secretary of state.
President Trump made the decision himself to fire Rex Tillerson because of their differences on the Iran nuclear agreement, tarrifs on steel and aluminum as well as North Korea Diplomacy. This comes after President Trump tweeted about making a few staff changes last week.
There have been no comments made by Rex Tillerson, but his aide reports he did not expect to be removed as the secretary of state.
“Rex and I have been talking about this for a long time. We go along actually quite well, but we disagreed on things.”
“We were not thinking the same, but with Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process.”
Having been only appointed to the position over a year ago, Rex Tillerson is reported to have not have been aware of the President’s decision as they had not spoken.
“I appreciate his commitment and his service, and I wish him well,” Trump said to reporters after breaking the news to the world.
The news was first broken through the president’s much-loved mode of communication, Twitter
“Mike Pompeo, Director of CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!
There were rumors of an impending resignation late last year in October that saw Rex Tillerson call a press meeting to refute the claims.
This has not come as a surprise to many considering the often strained and tumultuous relationship Mr. Tillerson had with the president. There were even reports of him having called the President “ a moron” expletive removed as well as being left out of the loop altogether with the talks with Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s president which he thought to be premature and was against.
The new soon to be Secretary of State has said in a written statement that, “I look forward to guiding the world’s finest diplomatic corps in formulating and executing the President’s foreign policy.”
This new promotion leads to Gina Hansel, the current deputy director of the CIA, being the new Director. A feat in itself, as she will be the first woman to occupy the helm of the agency.
Rex Tillerson was a surprise appointment as Secretary of State. At the time of his appointment, he had not had any previous experience in serving in the government. He, however, had two distinctive features that made his appointment highly controversial.
He was previously the CEO of ExxonMobil and oversaw a historic oil deal with oil giant Rosneft, that is now sanctioned. He was also against sanctions on Russia. He was also not warmly welcomed by employees under him, as they did not think he had any know how about the position he held.
